Well, hello there, fellow petrolheads! Buckle up as we delve into the realm of the Lexus LS - the rear- or all-wheel-drive sedan strutting its stuff in the "F1" class. This is the facelift of the fifth generation, and the grand reveal happened on July 7, 2020.
Now, let's talk about the tweaks that Lexus blessed the LS with during this facelift. They aimed for pinpoint improvements, all in the name of enhancing the car's comfort and ramping up safety for both passengers and the one behind the wheel.
The flagship of the brand bid farewell to its zigzagging daytime running lights, those separated from the main headlight clusters. The optics themselves now boast the BladeScan technology, making its debut on the revamped RX. The grille also underwent a makeover - now adorned with a pattern in dark metallic hues. It echoes the darkened decor of the rear lights. Additionally, the grid of the side air intakes on the front bumper got a fresh design. And let's not forget the new color in town - Gin-ei Luster gray.
Inside, there's not a sea of differences, but the main spotlight is on the display: the 12.3-inch screen is now extended out from the front panel for easier handling with the now-touch-sensitive interface (previously, the screen was passive). However, the touchpad on the central tunnel remains in its rightful place. They revamped the metal and leather decor palette. The seats got a cushier filling, and the stitching on them has a bit more depth. Moreover, the rearview mirror now boasts a display with enhanced resolution.
Just like before, the right rear passenger gets the Ottoman seat. The rear row is treated to heating, ventilation, massage functions, and adjustments in 18 directions. There's a touchscreen in the central armrest and two 11.6-inch screens for the entertainment multimedia system.
In Europe, the Lexus LS is still rocking the same powertrains as before. You've got the 3.4-liter biturbo six-cylinder delivering a whopping 422 horsepower and the hybrid setup pushing 359 horses, with a foundation of a 3.5-liter atmospheric V6. Both versions come with a ten-speed automatic gearbox, and you can opt for all-wheel-drive models. However, even here, they couldn't resist tweaking a few things: the gearbox program got a rewrite for fewer shifts, and the hybrid tends to lean more on electric power; also, the engines received upgraded supports.
The same story goes for the suspension: adaptive shocks have gone a bit softer, while the stabilizers for lateral stability have tightened their grip (although the car still offers an air suspension option). Furthermore, they've tinkered with noise cancellation systems to boost overall comfort.
But perhaps the crown jewel of this modernization effort is the introduction of the Lexus Teammate active safety system, meant to elevate the Lexus Safety System+. It lets the car take charge of the accelerator, brakes, and lane-changing decisions. But remember, this applies only to cruising beyond the city limits.
